With people living longer and America's active baby boomers reaching retirement age, more and more people are turning to online dating services to find (or replace) Mr. The most popular online dating sites among active older adults are the biggies like and e Harmony.com, which serve millions of people of all ages and thus have the biggest pool of potential mates. In May 2011, operator IAC launched Our Time.com, a site dedicated to the 50-plus crowd. A quick example: Over the past two years, the number of singles older than 50 who joined one of the dating sites run by People Media -- the number one provider of targeted, online dating communities for singles seeking meaningful relationships -- skyrocketed 400 percent.Davis recommends that 50-plus singles join one large, general site, such as or e Harmony, for sheer volume, plus one smaller niche site targeted to their age group. Adult Friend Finder asks customers to detail their interests and, based on those criteria, matches people for sexual encounters.Where traditional services aim to bringing people together for the purposes of a meaningful relationship or friendship, adult dating is aimed at those who are seeking short-term sexual encounters.
Josh Meyers, CEO of IAC's People Media, says other sites such as the company's Senior People saw a 400 percent growth in the past two years and Our aims to bring everyone in the 50 and older age group under one site."We saw a fervor for something just for them," he says of older adults.Compared with eight years ago, online daters in 2013 are more likely to actually go out on dates with the people they meet on these sites.Some 66% of online daters have gone on a date with someone they met through an online dating site or app, up from 43% of online daters who had done so when we first asked this question in 2005.Culling members from all IAC's other online dating sites, it debuted with a membership of more than 1 million, making it the world's largest site for baby boomers.Laurie Davis, founder and CEO of dating coach service e Flirt Expert, says much of her work involves helping people -- often older active adults -- figure out which dating sites to join.
