People, like myself, born in the 1950’s and early 1960’s were raised with some heavy patriarchal programming, and yet by the late 60’s and 70’s, the women’s liberation and gay rights movements began to dismantle that programming.
And as a woman who predominately dates straight, cisgender men, so far, I notice that these old ideas pop up more commonly, or at least more overtly, for people in my age group than they do for women 30 years younger than me.
In fact, quite a few have completely stopped dating because the constant rejection or disinterest from men over 50 has become too painful for them. “Skills or talents are super sexy and highlighting them makes you appear more dynamic to her,” says San Diego-based dating and relationship coach De Anna Lorraine.
The trick is sliding them into conversation naturally, so you don’t come off as awkward—or like you’re bragging. But you want to convey outgoing confidence, which won’t happen if you talk in a soft, muffled way.
